I have mixed feelings about this book. First - several elements are very similar to another series I've been reading (about a young woman who discovers she is a witch after her mother dies, communicates with her mother after death, her aunt becomes a mentor to her, and the heroine becomes romantically involved with a police officer. Also, in this book as in that by the other author, there seems to be a trend of one word nonsensical epithets - I mean, really - I am a southern girl, and I've never used "Sugar" as an exclamation as it was used in this book.). All that said, in spite of the similarities to the other series, this book sucked me in, and I enjoyed reading it. It was a fairly quick read (I am a quick reader at any rate), but as I said, enjoyable, and I look forward to reading the next book. So - overall - in spite of the plot similarities to this other series, I actually surprise myself and recommend this book.

Poison My Pretty A Cozy Witch Mystery edition by Amity Allen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this book. It was kind of fun to see Poppy as a fish out of water in the pageant world. I figured out who the murderer was about the same time as Poppy did. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book.
Great new beginning to a new witchy cozy. The characters were well developed and the storyline flowed together. I loved the main character, Poppy, and her familiar, Aloysius. I can't wait to see where this series goes. The best part, besides the awesome storyline, were the delicious recipes at the end. This is a book you won't want to miss.
Amity Allen has written a cute cozy mystery that revolves around the world of child beauty pageants and features fledgling witch, Poppy Parker, a freshly retired child tv star. This book flows smoothly and is edited better than many other books I have read lately. Good start to this Southern cozy series
Mostly an enjoyable read and I especially liked the wrap-up, at the end. I do not like the idea of beauty pageants, for children, especially when they're dressed like little grown-ups. As far as I am concerned there is nothing redeeming about them. As competitiveness seemed to be the focus, of the book, maybe another type of competition could have been used.
Back from playing a witch that solves crimes, Poppy, who just discovered she really has magic powers, can't let a poisoning go uninvestigated. She has a different style for searching for clues, but like most non-professionals, asks question before she has a firm idea of who the criminal is and how they may react to her investigation.
I love this new series and the characters!
OK, there are a few. This book introduces us to an intelligent, resourceful young woman who is just now discovering she has special abilities. If that's not enough, she also has a murder dropped in her lap. I gave this book five stars because it has good characters who grow as the story does, an excellent mystery neatly solved, a Witch who doesn't overdo her abilities, and a world I want to come back to soon. Oh yeah, and an uncanny black cat. Good Reading!
Children's beauty pageants and murder. What a combo. Poppy agrees to be a judge for a pageant when the regular judge can't make it. Considering the extremes that the mother's of the contestants are willing to go to so that their little miss beautiful will win, there is no shortage of potential murderers when the pageant director turns up dead in her potato salad. Poppy decides that she needs to find the murderer. Thus begins the tale. It is well written, interesting, and has plenty of plot twists. Lovers of paranormal cozy mysteries will love it.
